Introduction

Professor Suzannah Linton is presently at Renmin Law School as a Visiting Scholar, conducting research into the interplay of the Third Geneva Convention of 1949 (on prisoners of war) with international human rights law. She is Distinguished Professor at the Law School of Zhejiang Gongshang University in Hangzhou. She was previously Chair of International Law at Bangor University in the United Kingdom and Associate Professor of Law at the University of Hong Kong. In China, Professor Linton has also been Visiting Professor at the China University of Political Sciences & Law and at the China-EU School of Law; she regularly judges international mooting competitions, and is an advisor to the Chinese Initiative on International Law and the Chinese Initiative on International Criminal Justice.  Professor Linton’s academic work is widely published.

Professor Linton, a United Kingdom solicitor, is also a practicing international lawyer. Before her current position with Zhejiang Gongshang University, Professor Linton served as a Consultant to the United Nations in Moldova, on a special project advising on the development of the legal profession through the Moldova National Institute of Justice. During her legal career of over 25 years, Professor Linton has, inter alia, served as a United Nations Prosecutor for Serious Crimes in East Timor, at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the Claims Resolution Tribunal for Dormant Accounts in Switzerland, and has worked in the field in Cambodia, Indonesia, East Timor, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and elsewhere.

For this lecture at Renmin Law School, Professor Linton will speak about her ongoing work on Women Accused of International Crimes, recently published in the Criminal Law Forum. She will focus on one central issue: whether the adjudication of such female criminality should be handled differently.
